OTHERS PRESENT: Don Butler Tod Intersoll Pete Radka
- Ashville Free Library requesting an Area Variance to replace an existing covered porch/entry with a
new one closer to the roadside setback than allowed in Zoning Sec. 401 at property located at 2200 N.
Maple St., Specifically Sec3on 384.11-‐1-‐95.Mr. Stapleton swore in all who expressed intent to speak regarding the application.
Mr. Levesque asked what the applicant wished to do. Mr. Butler, President of the Library Board, said
that Pete Radka is their engineering consultant. He said currently the library has a landing and some steps.
He said over the last ten years they have done extensive work on the library and would like to beautify the
outside by putting a porch/veranda across the front of the building and siding the building. He said the porch would not be any closer to the road than it currently is but would extend across the front of the entire
building. He said the current porch is already closer to the roadside setback than allowed in zoning and that
is why they need the variance. After general discussion it was determined that the current porch is 29.4’
from the road edge and the new porch will be 25.10’ from the road edge. Mr. Stapleton said the
encroachment is increasing not decreasing by about 3 ½’. He said instead of the normal 50’ set back, now
they are decreasing that to 46.4’ from the center line of the road. Mr. Radka clarified the distance from the
road edge to the step on the new porch will be 25.10’. Mrs. Emick asked where the funds for the
construction were coming from. Mr. Butler said the project cost is roughly $81,000.00 and they have applied for a NYS Building Grant for Libraries for $61,000 which they are confident of receiving; $10,000
commitment from Community Foundation; and $10,000 from the Sheldon Foundation. Mr. Levesque asked if anyone wished to speak regarding the application. Mr. Levesque reviewed Town Law Sec. 267b. 3.
